How to Export Kindle Highlights & Notes (Every Method)

Your Kindle highlights don't have to stay locked inside Amazon. This guide covers every way to get them out — from the Kindle notebook page, from an e-reader's My Clippings file, or with Amazon's own per-book export — and how to turn the result into PDF, Markdown, or a Notion page.

Method 1: Export from read.amazon.com with one click

The fastest route for books bought on Amazon. Your highlights already sync to the Kindle notebook page — you just need to pick them up from there.

  1. Install the free Web Highlights extension in your browser.
  2. Open read.amazon.com/notebook and select a book. All its highlights and notes appear in the middle column.
  3. Click Import Highlights & Notes to Web Highlights. Every highlight comes in with its original color, and notes ride along.
  4. Repeat for each book you want. Each one is saved as its own page in your library, where you can tag, search, and edit everything.

Method 2: Upload My Clippings.txt from an e-reader

Kindle e-readers write every highlight into a single file called My Clippings.txt — including highlights from sideloaded books that never show up on the notebook page. You don't need to install anything for this one.

  1. Connect your Kindle to your computer with a USB cable and open it like a drive.
  2. Find documents/My Clippings.txt and copy it somewhere handy.
  3. Open the free Import Kindle Highlights tool and upload the file. It's parsed right in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server — and every book comes in organized on its own.

Method 3: Amazon's built-in export

Kindle e-readers can also email you a single book's notes: open the book, tap the top of the screen, choose the share icon (or Go To → Notes) and select Export Notes. Amazon sends the file to your account email. It works — but it's one book at a time, it needs the e-reader in hand, and the file arrives as a spreadsheet-style attachment you still have to clean up. For more than a book or two, the first two methods are faster.

Turn the export into PDF, Markdown, or Notion

Good to know

  • Some publishers cap how much of a book Amazon will show on the notebook page. The My Clippings.txt route isn't affected by that cap, so an e-reader export can recover highlights the website cuts off.
  • The Kindle phone app doesn't write a My Clippings file — for app-only reading, use the notebook page (Method 1).
  • Your clippings file is parsed on your device. Signing up is only needed if you want the imported books synced across devices.
